Ingredients

Campfire sandwich
  • 8 bread
  • 8 deli ham
  • 8 turkey
  • 8 cheese (cheddar or Swiss)
  • 4 tbsp butter Softened for easy spreading.
  • 1 mustard Optional.
  • 1 mayo Optional.

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Prepare the sandwiches
  1. Butter one side of each bread slice so the outside browns and crisps on the grate.
  2. Build sandwiches with butter-side out: bread, cheese, ham, turkey, cheese, then bread (add mustard and mayo if using).
Grill on the campfire grate
  1. Place sandwiches on a campfire grate over medium heat so they cook evenly without burning.
  2. Grill for 4-5 minutes per side until the bread is golden and the cheese melts, with clear grill marks forming on the outside.
Serve
  1. Remove from heat, cut in half to show the melted interior, and serve hot.

Notes

Pro tip: Keep the heat at medium so the bread toasts while the cheese fully melts—if it browns too fast, move the grate farther from the flames. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 2 days; reheat in a skillet over medium-low until warm and melty. Freezing isn’t recommended because the bread and cheese texture can change. For a lighter option, use reduced-fat cheese and lean deli turkey/ham.
