Ingredients

Hobo dinner cheeseburgers
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.25 Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 count American cheese slices 4 slices
  • 2 count potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 count onion sliced
  • 1 count bell pepper sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter 4 tablespoons
  • 4 count heavy-duty aluminum foil sheets 4 sheets

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Form the burger patties
  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 portions and form each portion into a thin patty, then season with salt and pepper.
  2. Set the patties aside while you prep the vegetables and foil packets.
Build and seal the foil packets
  1. Lay 4 sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil out and layer sliced potatoes, onions, and bell peppers on each sheet.
  2. Place 1 burger patty on top of the vegetable layer and add 1 tablespoon butter to each packet.
  3. Fold the foil into sealed packets so steam stays inside.
Cook on campfire grate
  1. Place the foil packets on a campfire grate over medium heat and cook for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway.
  2. Open the packets carefully and add the American cheese slices to the burgers, then reseal briefly just to melt the cheese.
Rest and serve
  1. Let the packets cool for 5 minutes before serving the burgers straight from the foil.

Notes

Pro tip: slice the potatoes thin so they soften fully within the 20–25 minute cook window. Store leftovers in the refrigerator up to 3 days, reheating in a skillet or microwave until hot; freeze is not recommended because potatoes can soften too much. For a lighter swap, use reduced-fat American cheese without changing the packet cook time.
